THE PRINCE'S TRUST ACHIEVE PROGRAMME in Scotland helps teenagers to develop skills and confidence in preparation for future employment, by undertaking projects in partnership with local organisations.
Students from Banchory Academy are currently busy working to provide a new picnic area at the Royal Deeside Railway at the Milton of Crathes, Aberdeenshire.
The location is the west end of the Milton of Crathes station platform, an area of disused ground that has been overtaken by nature over the years.
The volunteers have been busy clearing the site, removing existing fencing, and will be levelling the ground, installing new fence posts, and picket fencing.
Further work will entail constructing picnic tables, planters and other railway themed furnishings.
They are given a safety briefing before any work commences and are kitted out in suitable safety equipment. The work onsite is then demonstrated to the volunteers to ensure they are confident with what they are doing, and they remain observed - at a distance - by railway staff and teaching support staff to ensure they are working safely.
They are then largely left to their own devices to enable them the opportunity to solve any problems they encounter, by working as a team and letting individual interpersonal and leadership skills an opportunity to flourish.
